Question
Is there greater value in practical knowledge than in philosophy?
Answer
A merchant once challenged the philosopher Thales with this question. Thales said philosophers could be just as good at practical affairs, and proved himself by speculating on olive oil futures and making a killing.
I don't know if the story is apocryphal or not, but if true, it suggests that the practical value of philosophy is hedge fund management talent :)
More seriously, I think practical/impractical is a different dimension than philosophical/not-philosophical.
Philosophical knowledge is what urbanist Friedmann called appreciative knowledge. It helps you understand the world in more satisfying ways. The opposite is manipulative knowledge, that allows you to directly act on the world with predictable results, and possibly exploit those results for gain.
On a 2x2, you will find both practical and impractical types of both kinds of knowledge.
Pottery making by hand or doing arithmetic very fast on pen and paper are examples of manipulative-impractical skills.
Coming up with elegant abstractions is an appreciative-practical skill.
Angels on a pinhead is classic impractical-appreciative.
Being really good at fixing cars or finding software bugs is practical-manipulative.
There is significant coupling. The right kind of appreciative knowledge will act as a catalyst for corresponding kinds of practical knowledge.
